Kenya - Kiangundo AB (esp)
Kiangundo is a washing station on Mount Kenya’s slopes in Nyeri County, run by the Kiama Farmers’ Cooperative Society (FCS) since 1968. Around 800 smallholder members grow coffee at 1,700–1,800m, where rich volcanic soil, cool climate, and high altitude create outstanding quality.
Nearby, the Ragati Conservancy’s forests and marshes shelter elephants, buffalo, and leopards. Manager Jackson Mahu Kooro with Kiama since 1999, leads a dedicated team in careful cherry processing.
Formed in 2005, Kiama FCS now serves over 3,000 farmers who also cultivate bananas, maize, macadamia, and vegetables. The cooperative offers financing, affordable inputs, and training, boosting membership by 20% since 2022.
Recent upgrades include digital scales, Rainforest Alliance certification, and shade tree distribution. Following Kenya’s 2023 coffee reforms, Kiama now sells some coffee directly to buyers—earning higher returns, faster payments, and stronger long-term relationships.
Tasting Notes: A lively burst of red apple and blood orange, softened by sugar cane sweetness and framed with elegant structure.
