Guatemala - Calahute
Calahute is a family-owned coffee farm in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, founded in 1952 by the Anzueto family. Now managed by third-generation producer Alfonso Anzueto, the estate spans 226 hectares, with 210 dedicated to coffee. Calahute's high altitude and lush shade canopy create ideal conditions for growing diverse varieties, including Bourbon, Caturra, and rare Ethiopian heirlooms. Alfonso values biodiversity, maintaining natural shade trees and introducing bees to enhance the ecosystem. His commitment to quality is evident through meticulous lot separation and washed processing at the farm's wet mill. Despite labor shortages, Alfonso has adapted by diversifying crops and focusing on higher-value coffee. His efforts have earned recognition, with Calahute placing in Guatemala’s 2024 Cup of Excellence. Additionally, Alfonso runs "Café de Don Alfonso," a local coffee shop celebrating the estate's high-quality beans and his family's legacy.
