Ernelio Ortiz owns and operates Finca El Pedrero in Honduras's Montecillos region, a 12-hectare farm primarily planted with Catuai and IHCAFE 90 coffee varieties, alongside avocado trees. With approximately 56,000 coffee trees, Ernelio credits sustainable farming and environmental care for improving his family’s livelihood through higher-quality production and premium prices.

Our Green Buyer has collaborated with smallholders in the Marcala area, including COE and competition winners, sourcing unique microlots that highlight the diversity of Honduran coffee. These carefully selected lots represent exceptional quality, earning small-scale farmers better recognition and prices.

The Montecillos region is celebrated for its dramatic altitudes and breathtaking landscapes. Its cool evening climate, fostered by steep elevations near Honduras's southwest border with El Salvador, creates optimal conditions for coffee cultivation. Every year, Honduras’s prominence in the coffee sector grows, driven by dedicated farmers like Ernelio who transform the landscape into a hub for specialty coffee.
